Intro - Issue 24

It has been a Queer Summer
Hawaii came and went in a torrent of unremarkableness. At home, the sun totally failed to shine. Afternoons were punctated by thunderclaps and miserable drizzle. Even the season’s shark attacks were weak, with not one fatality reported.
Therefore, this magazine is as sultry as those summers when you were a kid and your skin turned to paper and broke off in the sheets, when your hair yellowed and it seemed like every single gal you met couldn’t wait to accept your foulest intentions. As your faithful servants, we are determined to prod your buttons even when our whiny environment fails to meet its seasonal obligations.
We begin issue number 24 with a Kelly Slater interview. This is timely because with his awesome powers superceded by the triumvirate of Dane Reynolds, Jordy Smith and Julian Wilson, Kelly won’t be required centre stage in 2008. Perhaps, finally, the most influential and fantastic surfer ever will be allowed some respite from his two tortured decades of fame. Kelly talks to new Stab contributor, Jordan Tappis.
The heart of the magazine beats with our third annual Stab Awards. This year we’ve replaced the Stab signet ring with a silver bracelet inscribed with the inspirational message: I’d Rather Be Eating Pussy. Needless to say, the aforementioned Reynolds, Smith and Wilson have been wearing em with gusto. Mick Fanning and Rob Machado refused theirs and hence were stripped of their awards. Stiffs.
We book-end the surf half of the magazine with two new departments: The Joy of Sex and Scenes. Jamie O’Brien, as good a sport as always, details his most intimate bedroom moments while Yadin Nicol lists his favourite scenes from literature, cinema and life.
I wouldn’t call this the greatest magazine ever to be birthed. It had to be delivered breech and suffers a slight palsy. Still, it’s yours, ours, and it’s here now. Take it in your arms and accept it, for it as beautiful
as it is flawed. — Derek Rielly.
