The pocket sized A-bomb sucking Ruski liquor in the image before you is Chelsea May Wheatley, lead hell bitch from our favourite Melbourne girl band, The Gingers. The Gingers aren’t an all-girl act anymore which is a bit of a shame for Goons drummer Cowboy who used to get off on saying he’d pashed them all.
No matter, the onstage chemistry between Chelsea and Nellie (the Gingers Xena-Warrior-Guitar-Princess) ensures there’s still plenty of sexual heat onstage. In fact, Chelsea’s command as a front woman can often be so powerful known swordsmen will cower in dark corners while ladies swarm in numbers closer and closer, eager to explore the forbidden longings within. “Some people do think we’re lesbians,” admits Chelsea May, matter-o-factly. “Maybe we are. It’s all good if they like the music.”
Chelsea, of Filipino heritage, grew up in Fremantle before moving to Victoria to have a serious shot at a career in music. The Gingers formed when she was just 15. Now, three-and-a-half-years later they’re on the verge of releasing their first commercial EP? Success seems assured. “I do it cause I wanna be famous and because I love to party, all day, all night, any time, anywhere,” she says. And just who will she party with when the Gingas go big time? “Probably just Nelly.
