Steel your fucking nerve, boys
This is the going to be the best Pipe Masters in six years. Two lifelong pals have to rip each other’s throat out to get to the crown. Blood and repercussion everywhere. It hasn’t been this good since AI made Kelly Slater weep in 2003. Stab stayed with AI for four days in November and recorded this interview (for the full transcript, buy Stab issue 39, out early December). I’ve lived in fucking both their shoes, says AI…
STAB: Describe the mental fritz of a world title showdown.
ANDY: I know exactly what Parko is doing right now, not sleeping, and I know exactly what Mick’s doing, keeping tight, not hurting himself, staying in the cocoon. Yeah, I’ve been in both their seats.
What is Joel thinking, right now?
Joel’s sick! I talked to Joel today. His mind-frame is fine. I told him, well, you’re going to have to rewrite the history books because Mick has his name in the book and you’re going to have to come in and scribble it out and… sssssssss… burn your name in there if you want it to happen. And he said, well, that’s what I’m going to do. I’m going to come in and win Pipe. And, I’m like, well, alright, let’s do it! And, I just hope you’re not in a heat with me!
You’re a competitive motherfucker. I know you’ve you been working through the different scenarios. Give me your take on it all.
Yeah! I love it! I’ve lived in fucking both these two shoes. It’s like them watching me and Bruce go for a title. Say, I’m Mick, I’ve won one already, but Bruce hasn’t and Bruce is the one everyone loves, but they know it’s okay if I don’t win one because I’ve already won one. In essence, I want Joel to win because he’s my brother that’s never won the world title and I want him to win one but at the same my brother Mick is a guy who’s won it and he’s worked his ass off and deserves it more than anyone, except maybe Joel. I win both ways. I sleep good either way. That’s the way I look at it. They’re both my brothers, they’re both my best friends, either way I will feel bad for one of em. Back in the me-and-Kelly days, it was love and hate. It was black and white. There was an obvious divide. People liked me or they liked him. With Mick and Joel, everyone loves both of em.
A hypothetical, just because they’re so much fun. Mick loses early and you have Joel in a semi-final. He wins, he’s world champ.
Oh, I’m going to try my hardest. I’m not going to roll over for no one. As much as I think he should be world champion, I think that he needs to be able to get by everyone. There’s no walk-throughs. Occy tried to give Sunny his board when all Sunny had to do was get through a heat to win. Occy literally tried to give him the board and they both rode for the same company and Sunny wouldn’t take it. I hand it to Sunny for not taking the board off Occy and coming back and winning the world title in 1999. I wouldn’t give a heat to anyone. No matter what. I want to show Billabong how important I am to them. You know what, I want to come back and win my world title, do my thing. If Parko wants to be world champ, he better be ready to beat everyone. It’s the only way to win. – Derek Rielly
