Andy Irons world title showdown interview

Andy Irons

Steel your fucking nerve, boys

This is the going to be the best Pipe Masters in six years. Two lifelong pals have to rip each other’s throat out to get to the crown. Blood and repercussion everywhere. It hasn’t been this good since AI made Kelly Slater weep in 2003. Stab stayed with AI for four days in November and recorded this interview (for the full transcript, buy Stab issue 39, out early December). I’ve lived in fucking both their shoes, says AI…

STAB: Describe the mental fritz of a world title showdown.

ANDY: I know exactly what Parko is doing right now, not sleeping, and I know exactly what Mick’s doing, keeping tight, not hurting himself, staying in the cocoon. Yeah, I’ve been in both their seats.

What is Joel thinking, right now?

Joel’s sick! I talked to Joel today. His mind-frame is fine. I told him, well, you’re going to have to rewrite the history books because Mick has his name in the book and you’re going to have to come in and scribble it out and… sssssssss… burn your name in there if you want it to happen. And he said, well, that’s what I’m going to do. I’m going to come in and win Pipe. And, I’m like, well, alright, let’s do it! And, I just hope you’re not in a heat with me!

You’re a competitive motherfucker. I know you’ve you been working through the different scenarios. Give me your take on it all.

Yeah! I love it! I’ve lived in fucking both these two shoes. It’s like them watching me and Bruce go for a title. Say, I’m Mick, I’ve won one already, but Bruce hasn’t and Bruce is the one everyone loves, but they know it’s okay if I don’t win one because I’ve already won one. In essence, I want Joel to win because he’s my brother that’s never won the world title and I want him to win one but at the same my brother Mick is a guy who’s won it and he’s worked his ass off and deserves it more than anyone, except maybe Joel. I win both ways. I sleep good either way. That’s the way I look at it. They’re both my brothers, they’re both my best friends, either way I will feel bad for one of em. Back in the me-and-Kelly days, it was love and hate. It was black and white. There was an obvious divide. People liked me or they liked him. With Mick and Joel, everyone loves both of em.

A hypothetical, just because they’re so much fun. Mick loses early and you have Joel in a semi-final. He wins, he’s world champ.

Oh, I’m going to try my hardest. I’m not going to roll over for no one. As much as I think he should be world champion, I think that he needs to be able to get by everyone. There’s no walk-throughs. Occy tried to give Sunny his board when all Sunny had to do was get through a heat to win. Occy literally tried to give him the board and they both rode for the same company and Sunny wouldn’t take it. I hand it to Sunny for not taking the board off Occy and coming back and winning the world title in 1999. I wouldn’t give a heat to anyone. No matter what. I want to show Billabong how important I am to them. You know what, I want to come back and win my world title, do my thing. If Parko wants to be world champ, he better be ready to beat everyone. It’s the only way to win. – Derek Rielly

not to say kelly definitely would've gotten the score or won over AI, but joel played his hand, and it wasn't any cleaner or more sportsmanlike than the dirty trick the hawaiian chicks pulled on beachley last year.
for your sake, i hope you don't believe in karma, joel.
cheers.

I hope his "performance" the other day at Haliewa is not indicative of his big come back...

This is AI boastful talk. He couldn't and he shoulnd't say anything different than this. He's speech have a target, Billabong and his fans.
Hope to see AI back in good form, doing good scoring waves.
Its going to be a great pipe final, with all surfers involved,AI included!

mick will beat bede in the final and mick will win it all and it will be really boring.

or maybe dane will beat ceej in the final and slater will ride the deep six again or whatever board that was and AI will lose to marlon lipke and he'll somehow re-qualify

As mentioned by some of the crew below, the story about Parko being too far inside on that wave in the final, then backing out is true. It likely cost Slater the title, giving it to AI.

Slater has incredibly good sportsmanship and I don't sense he's the vengeful type. But Joel isn't as popular as AI claims, believes or thinks. And that stunt at Pipe that kept Slater off that wave is a good indication why.

Karma will take out Parko. Maybe the ankle was the karma. But in a well written script, an end-of-the-year, last event, goes down to the wire and Fanning takes the crown story, it would be fitting to see Slater be the one who gives Parko a little payback.

Besides, between AI, Bruce I, Slater and JOB, I don't see much separating these guys at Pipe. They've all won it in real surf. Not to mention all the goofy foots who could easily come thru if it's real Pipe with lefts, lefts, lefts.

Hasn't Samuels hinted on other posts that it was the dreaded, "H"...I'm sure I could dig it up from a Postsurf Archive.Maybe Billabong doesn't want Andy speaking about this......Not trying to smear Andy or start rumors, but i believe this was mentioned in a Postsurf thing, where you kind of had to "read between the lines"

Wow. Good Advertising. Guess they figure if we'll read an Andy Irons video, we'll be inclined to buy those frames Bruce is sporting....especially w/ the torso flex/shotgun demeanor....

Like the rest of the "Dream (shit) Tour" the waves are going to be bad. Mick will place higher than Parko with his boring 3 to the beach surfing winning the world title. Some brazo in the lower half of the ratings will place high enough to re-qualify putting us through another year of painful over claiming on low scoring waves. Some unfortunate surfers on the bubble wont re-qualify because one of the thousand Hawaiian pipe specialists beats him in the 3rd round. AI's comeback will be less than impressive, and it will result in another bender.
Bring on the rebel tour, better surfing, better waves.

At Pipe I can roundouse into the barrell, bounce off the foam ball and come come out wearing a different rashee Plus I've been training my brains on the new nintendo DS, I'm eating raw foods and I have a pair of phantom stubbies. It's all performance based stuff.

I hate to say it but if AI's game is on- then he's the king at Pipe, he has technically the best backhand attack in big hollow lefts, better than slater.

Despite what AI says, has anyone considered AI's final against Kelly in 'that final' at pipe where Parko asked Andy if he wanted him to surf down the beach and let him an kelly do their thing. Andy said "Na man i need you out there". Parko then contentiously held kelly off a a wave by pulling into a close out (supposedly). Think Kelly was quoted yelling "fuck that was my 10, that was my world title" (or something to that effect)at Parko.

I'm not shooting for a conspiracy theory or implying that AI would throw a heat for Parko (or anyone for that matter). But its an interesting thought given the current situation.
