ASP World Junior Tour set to sizzle in 2010
The ASP has made the welcome decision to bring a three event World Junior Tour to beaches and computer screens around the world in 2010, and at some of the globe's most hi-fi locales.
The first World Junior Tour event will be the Oakley, Keramas Pro Junior held in Bali from October 2-13, 2010, with the Billabong's Narrabeen event still to run in January and the ASP looking to add a third event, likely in the Northern hemisphere, in late October or early November. France, Hawaii and Central America are three options the ASP are examining heavily, with a decision to be reached, they hope, before their board meeting on February 23rd.
The World Junior Tour will use the same filtering process to select competitors as Billabong's Narrabeen World Junior event, but the champion will now be decided over three contests instead of one. Six contestants will be selected from ASP Australasia, ASP South America, ASP North America and ASP Europe, with five representatives from ASP Africa, ASP Hawaii and ASP Japan, and additional wildcards to make up the 48-man field. Their entry will be based on regional tour ratings gathered from January 1st to August 31st, creating a three event, best of the best hit out, in a condensed window. A very worthy side dish to the big show.
The recent Billabong ASP world junior championship at Narrabeen rated between the top two events of this author’s (short-lived) career and the waves never broke three foot. It showcased a brand of surfing that gave an undeniable portal into the future, one that had the most ardent surf purists in raptures.
