Da Payne not enough to topple Kelly

Prior to his World Tour debut, Dusty had told Stab he was readying his front side finner for a WCT unveiling.

“I have no expectations. I just wanna put on a good show for everybody,” he’d said.

The surfing viewer got what he didn’t pay for yesterday when Dusty javved two of his patented forehand uber-wafts in his round three loss to Kelly Slater. The first, which you will see at the 24-second mark, was the foundation of a 9.17 ride. His second, just a 4.67, eliciting calls of “large scale bribery, rort, rig it more why don’t you” from some. Others, such as us here at Stab, thought perhaps the score was a little under but it was never the 5.93 that was required.

The purity of the surfing remains, however! Basque in the youthful abandon and much needed tonic that’s been delivered to World Tour surfing in 2010, below. What Rebel Tour?

agree with bob. 9.17 was deserved, 5.93 to win was not. surfing isnt snowboarding - its not about one big maneuver

Kelly looked like he was underwater the whole time. Board looked WAY too small.

All can say is that Dusty blew minds in his heat. Kelly on the other hand was just ok...nothing special. Feel bad for Dusty he was robbed no doubt. The ASP still loves "3 the beach" huh??? Doesn't matter anyway Kelly has begun to look very beatable compared to Joel, Mick, Taj, and JOrdy. He will NOT win the world title this year unless Teahupoo and Pipe are full on 10-15 foot.

Kelly was actually boring to watch along side Dusty.. Kinda like him being at the Boost Sho at Bondi surfing alongside Owen, Chippa and Jordy. Way to support progression eh?

He definately didn't get the score his second wave was way smaller and crumblier than the first one he got.

kellys 7.93 was no where near as good as his first 7.17 someone got pushed through a little bit.

Dustys first finner was score correctly, but it kind of skewed his second wave score, dusty did a slightly less radical but much smooother finner and got nothing for it.

if the new judging is supposed to be about progression and stuff, how is it that kellys gets a 7.93 for 4 foam climbs to the beach, then dusty throws crazy tail again and gets a 4?

Kelly's last wave a 7.93? tap, tap, tap, tap. that was a joke. Dusty's 1 finner was a 7.93. reward the kid. those things are super hard.

The asp judges know how crucial it is to have kelly on tour and pushed him through that heat. he brings so much money and intrest to the sport.

The "finners" executed by Dusty here, most of the maneuver in its entirety is really in the reverse. The fins are out and back in so quick its possible the judges are focusing more on the reverse aspect at the end of the move than the "fins free" part.?
Dane and Jordy do their versions of the move finishing open a lot of the time and both seem to score well without the added risk of the reverse.
Maybe a case of less is more?

I believe dusty was overscored slightly on the first wave and underscored slightly on the other.. the front side finners were good but you can't give them 7's, 8's, 9's without linking something else pretty decent... can you? close one but judges got it right with kelly just. kellys foot is buckled....or maybe he is saying that cause he is scared to face the tricksters in 2 foot waes. Kelly deserved to win...dusty just couldnt get a back up. Seemed like there was only 6-8 decent waves max per half hour.

Dusty got totally ripped, Kelly got so buffed by the judges with his floater/foam climb little lip tap combos. Dusty laid it all down on the line with high risk moves, that's what you want to see. What a joke!! Lame Kelly you should be embarrassed.
