Dane vs Joel: The Director's Cut

Dane vs Joel: The Director's Cut

The Heats on Demand function featured on the websites of World Title Race events, shows a surfer’s top two rides. So it’s likely you didn't see the rest of the shit Dane Reynolds did in his renaisance heat against Joel Parkinson in the quarter-final of the Quiksilver Pro.

And if you did, this two minute edit of all Dane’s artistry isn’t gonna hurt.

(Footage courtesy of Quiksilver, edited by Stab man, Riley Blakeway)

...and below, another inspired edit of the heat, with a very different ambience, from multi-talented Australian surf-media personality, Steve Shearer.

could it be that all of slaters experiment with board lengths and shapes has resulted in ultra fun fast air friendly weapons that blast older versions out of the water.

What a joke. Dane gets a couple of nice turns in there but it's nowhere as good as any of his video sections. And where are the punts at.The mans getting old.
I feel let down. I think i'll go and poke my toaster with a fork and see what happens.

What has The Whip got you rattled like Joel got rattled by Dane? I guess you put a little Billabong sticker on your board so you can be just like Joel, oh bless.

who wants to listen to a perfect news reader (billabong boring and ripcurl robot) over an on fire comedian delighting the crowd with flair....quiksilver may be in trouble on the stockmarket but not in the water.

What would JOB do?!?!
I know what'd he'd do.
He'd through his whole arsenal of
almost as good moves
at either of these two
and still come up short—every time.

An on a slight aside, i'm both honored and ashamed
that the moniker has been thieved
and that he blew it on the DD call.
n00b—jk i love you
Then feast on that!

yeah riley get a little EPMD

Dane is so raw and agressive in his approach. Whereas parko is painting a beautiful picture on the wave, dane is literally attacking it with everything he has. so great to watch

The funny thing is that Parko just surfed the way he would have to win the event against say Fanning or Slats. Just didnt work against Dane

After 3 years of media hype, we finally get to see it. Just incredible. Dane takes down a big gun-"a landmark moment in competitive surfing".

The Whip watched that heat as it happened and can confirm that Dane destroyed Joel, he made Joel look old and slow, Joel was rattled, looked like he had seen a ghost after the heat.

Dane got the better (sick) waves and ripped the bag out of it - big deal. He didn't do one air/one turn that hasn't been done in comps before by the other top-line guys (Taj, Slater, Fanning or Parko himself). However, the comboes were sick. But, honestly, no reason to blow your wad Jed. Perhaps the biggest 'landmark', was that he was able to put it together for a whole heat - he was extremely lucky to still be in the comp at all by that stage.

If Joel and Dane were waiters and we were comparing the strengths of their respective styles I would expect that Joel would place my meal nicely in front of me, pour me a glass of wine professionally and carry himself with poise.
If it were Dane serving me I would be ready to wear that glass of wine over the head and to find a flea collar in my soup.
Joels doing the moves and hes doing them with such style. Danes got game for sure but surfs like a Rapist running from his victim.
Christian Fletcher blew minds with his air attack back a decade or more but everyone said "yuck" as well as "wow" at the same time. Fletcher surfed as if he had something inserted and EVERYONE noticed..Dane is like the Emperor that wore no clothes, everyone's seeing it but saying nothing.

As I said before ...reynoldz & slatz are definitely artists .... but don't anyone tell them that.
And - never heard the smiths / morrisey combined
with surf footage - thats totally radical.

Kelly said the d. diver doesn't throw that much spray and I can see what he was talking about. Having said that, I'd still love to have a 5'5" with glass on fins because they are rad as fuck.
