STAB: This is the first time the Brazil event has been held in June (it used to be in November). How different is it being over there in winter as opposed to summer?
TB: Pretty rank. It's cold, rainy, the waves are shitty. The water's not much colder. It's not much different. The wave used to stand up more in summer but now it's kinda fat and burgery. And, there's this brown sludge from the river and it feels like you've waxed up with vaseline. Hideous, if I'm to be entirely honest.
And the good news?
Good acai. And, fuck, there are a few rigs about. It's a long weekend here and some've somehow found the event out here in the sticks. There's nothing but mud but they reckon the nightclub here has been filled with rigs in heels.
Who's tasted the town?
None of the surfers. No surfers go out during the contests.
What about good ol Dane? Isn't he always out?
He has a couple beers but doesn't hit the town. He said he gets too nervous and he drinks to take his mind off surfing the next day, which is pretty cool.
Perhaps he wasn't out last night then. Sure is a bummer he lost again.
He must be getting pretty over it. I didn't go down and watch him but I heard he could have easily gotten through. He can't surf at anything but 110%. He does a wild finner and just needs to bang a little closeout and he's through but he'll toss his whole board out and fall off. I like his attitude. He's the best to watch, f'sure.
Anything else about the town?
Well, Florianopolis is pretty cool but Imbutuba is a morbid little town. Out the front of mine is Praia Do Rosa which is a rippable wave. Thing is, no one brings their cameramen to Brazil. It's real clippable (as in, easy to get clips).
Every man and his blog, eh.
Yeah, you have to see this blooper of Macca pegging a footy straight at Dayyan's face. I nearly cried.
Your trainer Johnny has been with you in two finals the past two years where you've finished second. That man gonna get his event bonus in Brazil?
He wants to win one pretty bad. I've got a good board and a fucken bright green wetsuit so I'll be standing out whether I'm skilful or not. It's only early days but no one's really been doing anything too special over here.
