  • Several years back, but only really learned to take a half decent photo about 6 months ago. I probably should have read the maunal sooner.
  • Win lotto, actually for my girlfriend to win lotto, cause I never buy a ticket myself.
  • I don't have the attention span for books, I just like to look at pictures.
  • Pulp Fiction. Amazing depth to all the characters and awesome one-liners.
  • King of Kong. Because Billy Mitchell is such a prick!
  • Monster Children, Stab, Vice
  • Surf Industry know it all.
  • Getting a green single fin for Christmas when I was 9. Unfortunatley it was a shared gift with my older brother, so I'd have to wait until he was finished surfing before I ever got a go. Fortunately he was shipped off to boarding school soon after.
  • for folks with nothing better to love.
  • good in a way. It will be realized that all the people getting paid stupid amounts of money aren't really worth so much. And I might be able to afford a shitty house kinda close to the beach.
  • Choice aye bro and other cliché things you Aussies think Kiwis actually say.

Hi there interweb browsing type people! Does anyone actually read these things!? I'm guessing from checking out this site I'm possibly going to get a few comments from other Little Weeds contenders, mostly just saying I stabbed you, now stab me back!  Sweet, better than nothing I'spose?  Sure I'll check out your page, no worries!!

So yeah about me!? I live on the East Coast of NZ in a town called Mount Maunganui. It's not really that great a place to be a surf photographer. 90% of the time it's flat, and then out of that remaining 10%, 8% of that would be made up of 2ft waves. I'm no math whiz, but that adds up to fuck all good surf days. When there is swell it's usually nice and clean in the morning, but the lights only good to shoot in the arvo when it's already gone howling onshore. Also Bruce & Andy Irons don't live next door to me, so there goes my chances at a Surfer Mag cover shot (no offence to my actual neighbours Wayne & Luke, you guys rip but the Surfer photo editor doesn't know who you are). Add to that the fact that I work a full time job and I'm really starting to sound like a whiney little bitch!! But that's ok because I doubt anyone's going to battle this deep into this pile of waffle anyways.

I contribute photos to NZ Surfing magazine, sometimes I get the odd postage stamp size image run, or if I'm lucky I might get an upgrade to a credit card size shot.  Although in the last issue I was stoked to snag my first double page spread.   I've just started a photo blog and I have plans to peddle framed line-up shots through the website and one of the local surf stores.  Hopefully it'll be a roaring success and I'll be able to retire by 30?  Oh crap I might be behind the 8-ball on that one, I'm already 34.

During the flat spells I keep myself entertained by taking photos of anything else interesting I see.  Usually that's just my dog, Rocky the mini-wiener, but unfortunately she hates having here photo taken (barks at me furiously) and she's not very photogenic.

I'm pretty fond of imperfections in photos and I've recently aquired a couple of lenses that are so bad they're good.  The cheapest crappy fisheye ever made that is so soft on the edges it makes you feel like you're in a dream and a lensbaby which is basically a springy tube with a hole in the end that you manually focus and change the aperture by chucking different size rings in there.  These two keep the trippy stoner looking 70's portraits flowing and I find them a bit more challenging and rewarding than a standard digi-snap.

This fricken form doesn't have any type of spell check so now I'm getting a little freaked out that you're all laughing and my terrible spelling.

Righto, I'm back on track now.  Actually I've kinda run out of steam, and no doubt you're bored anyway, so just look at the pictures dummy.

i have a feeling they are looking for people under 20... the indomania shots look good, they got a nice vibe to them. can you tell me where the waves are in shots - 7, 13, 17? were you going to put any videos up? as i'd be interested in checking it out.

hey rambo! sorry i didnt get back to you earlier i've been up the coast without internet for the last week.... some of the local guys have there own tripods. but not all. there is a guy that films for aman gati called ray, you can buy footage off him. he has a good 3 chip SD camera i think. the dual plate is probably the best way to go. make sure you take a pelican case or water proof bags to get all your gear over to the tower dry...

cool photos, being a keen surfer i don't understand how photographers don,t go surfing when its pumping and it looks like youv'e been to a few great looking set-ups but a mate of mine who's a photographer told me that when he goes surfing he cant stand to see all the picture opportunities go by. is this true? anyway enough rant , check out my profile and write back

  • Kiwi groms in Indo

    Posted on July 25, 2009

I recently spent a week in Indo with Kiwi groms Mikey Mallalieu & Alex Dive.  I was shooting photos but also had a vid cam set up on a dual plate to catch some video action.  I put together this little clip for the groms.

I just got home from a month in Indo.  I spent most of my trip surfing, but hooked up with fellow Kiwi little weeds Alex Dive, Mikey Mallalieu and Rangi Ormand this week and shot some photos.

Ha ha, read that cheesy line on a No Fear tee shirt. Pretty stoked to have placed 2nd in the photo-bro section, it's an honour to be acknowledged as there are so many amazingly talented photographers on little weeds. Anyways did you know that 2nd in round 2 wins a trip to Bali!?

  • Alex Dive - Kiwi super grom!

    Posted on May 20, 2009

Alex Dive lives just down the road from me and I'm stoked he's just signed up for little weeds. At only 16 years old Alex can flair tail with the best of them, but really it's his mature style and technique that set him apart from the other kids. Check out this hack sequence he threw down the other day.
