Derek's Mantle Piece

Derek wears April 77 jeans, rare CD sunglasses, decorates his mid-century modern home with Howard Roark-inspired pieces and is one of the most brilliant writers of our time. His distinctive style is characterised by economy, understatement and wit paired with flamboyant decadence. While at Waves magazine, Derek and partner Sam hatched the idea of Stab, which has since become a pornographic surf sensation. Yet, it is Derek's words that have given Stab such tremendous appeal. In one issue he asked, "Can a man photograph the budding breasts of a 13-year old girl without being swept up in a righteous fervour?" In another he explained, "If my father's Vietnam-era rifle that lay slumped in the corner of the hallway cupboard hadn't had its bolt removed I would have happily gunned the town down." Bold and brilliant.
He likes frozen vodka margaritas and underage girls.

From the mentor: "My Little Weed will be an original. He'll love words, but without pretence. He'll know what an original thought is, and will be his own worst critic. He'll know good surfing, even if he can't javelin the tail. He reads voraciously, for pleasure and to learn. He's part Gary Shteyngart, part John Horne Burns and part JT Leroy (that awesome middle-aged fake) with a little Rex Reed on the side. He loves dialogue and observation. He might have a degree; he might be in year 11. The element that separates him from the mob is, a, he's an original and, be, he loves to work. I'll work hard with my Little Weed and turn him into the best surfing magazine editor in the world. A low bar, but a bar nonetheless."

Making your entry pop: I want you to tell me about yourself, that's all you've got to do. There's a video option here and if you'd like to cut a piece of camera, that's great, too. Brevity is the key. You might have the finest education money can buy but that doesn't mean I want to know how many adjectives you've learnt. If you begin a sentence with hell or heck, or use lazy adjectives like incredible or amazing, you'll be shot. Instead of loading up the gallery function with photos, I'd like to see covers of your favourite books, showing me the diversity of your readings.

DR, I never heard back about my Alfy article. Take it you didn't like? I know you are a busy man, but DC G. even got back to me. He broke the article down marking errors and suggestions etc. I was hoping for a response from you. Not all bad news, I received a few phone call from some other mags.

Derek, was hoping you could please provide some feedback on some of the pieces I wrote, particularly the ones at the end of the competition. It's difficult to gauge how I actually performed, whether I got better, worse or just reeked the entire way through, so any constructive criticism would be appreciated... Cheers
