Reunion Isle
Posted on July 2, 2009
You guys might of seen the posts on Stab from our little Reunion Island voyage. The trip was a genuine surf dog mission, no cocktails round the pool we put some solid hours in trying to nail down clips. The Island doesn't lack swell, though St Lou (the left) kinda bends out to sea meaning flair sections are minimal. After a week on the left we headed round the island hunting for something fresh. A right wedge was only 20 minutes down the road and the thang was throwing up some massive ramps... Jordy went ko...

The Curse of the Collective

Is hi-fi surfing directly associated with injury? Is this why surfing moves forward so slowly? Not slowly, but slower than you'd expect. Check the Casualty Count from MC thus far...

Kai Neville
Film maker mentor
My Modern Collective
Kai is now. Having worked with Taylor Steele for the past many years, Kai has recently begun directing his own movie, Modern Collective. It is artistic and fabulous. He is beautiful and wise. His blond, saltwater-dusted hair tickles the top of his shoulders. He makes young surfers perform. They punt higher and spin faster when Kai is at the controls. He thinks Julian Wilson fin ditches like a mad hui. He and Dion Agius enjoy surfing and filming at nude gay beaches in France. He wants the progression to keep going. He wants to push surfer to be inventive and he wants the kids to be amped with hi-fi surf movies. Drive-Thru no more.
He likes leather bondage gear and stuffed, plush kangaroos.
From the mentor: "Surf films are dull right now. With new technology emerging the market is flooded with good-looking films that lack other elements to complete the package. If you work on the creative side of things with easily accessible technology you can easily jump ahead of the pack. I hope there is a breed of youth wanting to take surf movies to a new level, if you look at snowboard films they are leaps and bounds ahead of us with shooting, soundtracks and creative elements. I've always watched Taylor Steele's movies and they are the perfect pre surf formula. I'm also a big fan of Joe G's's work at Globe: great soundtracks, world-class cinematography and editing. Get those three right and you're golden. And, look beyond tried and tested formulas. Music videos are littered with good ideas. Steal em. Also, unless your talent is an incredibly charismatic, lose the interviews. "Yeah, well Dane was reeping on the rights, ay." Meh!
"It's easy: good surfing, well-crafted shots, new angles (go on, that camera zooms out, y'know) and a good mix of soundtrack: rock, electro, fast, slow, whatevs. Rap is kinda hard to watch in a surf movie but hey, prove me wrong, that's just my taste."
Making your entry pop: "You'll make us feel like we're not watching a surf film. Is it a music video clip, is it a documentary, is it animation, or is it so exquisitely shot that we just cannot resist it?"
